What is the StackInterview Resume Builder?
The StackInterview Resume Builder is a free, browser-based tool that lets you create a polished, professional resume without installing any software or creating an account. Choose from two carefully designed templates - Modern and Professional - customize your color scheme, fill in your details using the structured editor, and download a pixel-perfect PDF with one click.
Your data is stored entirely in your browser using local storage, so it persists between sessions without ever leaving your device. You can also export your resume as a JSON file to back it up or transfer it to another browser.
How to Build Your Resume in 5 Steps
- 1Choose a template - Click Modern or Professional in the top bar. Modern suits most roles; Professional adds a structured sidebar great for senior or technical positions.
- 2Pick a color theme - Select Emerald (default), Slate Blue, or Amber to match your personal brand. The color propagates through the header and skill indicators automatically.
- 3Fill in your details - Use the editor panel on the left to add your personal info, work experience, education, skills, awards, volunteering, and achievements. Everything updates live in the preview.
- 4Preview and zoom - Use the zoom controls (+/−) to inspect your resume at different scales. The preview is pixel-for-pixel identical to the printed output.
- 5Download as PDF - Click the PDF button. Your browser's print dialog will open - choose 'Save as PDF' and print to file. For best results, use Chrome or Edge.
Resume Writing Tips for Software Engineers
- •Lead with quantified achievements. Instead of 'improved performance', write 'reduced API latency by 40% using Redis caching'.
- •Tailor your summary to each job posting. Mirror 2–3 key phrases from the job description to pass ATS filtering.
- •Keep your resume to 1–2 pages. Senior engineers may use 2 pages, but every line should earn its place.
- •Put your most impressive role first. Recruiters spend ~7 seconds on first scan - your best experience must be visible immediately.
- •Separate skill categories clearly. Grouping Languages, Frameworks, and Tools separately makes it easier for interviewers to assess fit.
- •Include links. GitHub, LinkedIn, and personal site URLs signal an active professional presence.
- •Use consistent date formatting. 'Jan 2022 – Present' is cleaner and more ATS-friendly than mixing formats.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Resume Builder completely free?
Yes. No account, no subscription, no watermark, no credit card. The builder is fully free and open to everyone.
Will my resume data be saved if I close the tab?
Yes - all data is automatically saved to your browser's local storage. You can also click Export to save a JSON backup and Import it later to restore your resume on any device.
Can I use this to build a resume for tech interviews?
Absolutely. The builder was designed by engineers for engineers. The skill section supports multiple categories (Languages, Frameworks, Tools, etc.) and the templates format experience entries in the way tech recruiters expect.
Are the templates ATS-compatible?
Yes. Both templates use clean semantic formatting with proper heading hierarchy and no images in the text flow (profile images are kept to the header). This makes them readable by major ATS systems like Greenhouse, Lever, and Workday.
How do I download as PDF?
Click the PDF button in the top bar. Your browser's print dialog will open. Select 'Save as PDF' as the destination, set margins to 'None' or 'Minimum', and make sure 'Background graphics' is enabled for color themes. Chrome and Edge give the best results.
